Please take a look at our Awards page. We are so proud to have such wonderful wines to offer the Rio Grande Valley and beyond. All of these wines are from grapes grown in our Dos Rios Vineyard and wines made 100% from these grapes. That together with our work and that of our expert and dedicated winemakers and family are making these incredible wines. We are pleased to welcome into our family the dedicated experts at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley: Dr. Engil Pereira and Dr. Rafael Almeida and the USDA.
2012 First Fruits for Grapes in Rio Grande City
June 2012 saw the first harvest of Black Spanish Le Noir grapes in Rio Grande City. On June 29 of that year, Delfino Garza Jr and family harvested close to six hundred pounds of grapes grown at the Dos Rios Vineyard on Highway 83. This beautiful harvest marked the first of its kind as the area begins to develop as producer of high-quality grapes for the Texas wine industry.
The fifteen acres as the family calls it, sits on a former farm property and adjoins the Rio Grande and the Rio San Juan on the Mexican side of the border. It is also bounded on the west by Kelsey Creek. The prolonged drought and the excessively hot summers actually help to produce a very early ripening and very sweet grape. Our plans for the future of the vineyard included adding more vines including Blanc Du Bois, which were added in 2014, a wine tasting demonstration room, a winery, and a restaurant. Since then, the Blanc Du Bois has flourished and produced a dry white wine. The Black Spanish is also producing a beautiful wine which has been released and is already racking up medals.
Each season brings special joys at Dos Rios Winery. This spring with our tasting room open, friends can enjoy the rebirth of our vines which currently include Blanc Du Bois, Le Noir Black Spanish, and Chardonnay. The citrus have blossomed and we have tangerines, oranges, grapefruit and lemons. Most exciting is the blooming of our olive trees with many tiny Arbequina, Chemlali, and Koroneiki olives. These together with the peaches, pecans, and pears are a sight to behold. In 2024 we have olives with fruit and we want everyone to come see these beauty growing in the Rio Grande Valley, Rio Grande City, Texas.
We started out small, but our hopes are to showcase the rich history, the great climate, and the agricultural bounty of this region of the country. We are so proud of our community Rio Grande City, Texas, and the Rio Grande Valley, and we hope that this venture will further strengthen the economy, says Delfino Garza, Jr local architect and owner of the vineyard.
Many new ventures are coming to Dos Rios Winery and we invite you to visit Rio Grande City. Our Tasting Room is open and the first trolley tour took place on June 20, 2024. Call RGC Main Street and ask them to set up more as the first one is booked.
